BHP and SAIL Sign MOU for Decarbonization Initiatives
The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), is teaming up with BHP, a leading global resources company, to help reduce carbon emissions in steelmaking. They’ve signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore ways to make steel production greener, particularly for SAIL’s blast furnace operations in India.
As part of this agreement, SAIL and BHP are looking into
various strategies to lower greenhouse gas emissions at SAIL’s integrated steel plants. This includes considering alternative materials like hydrogen and biochar, and building local research capabilities to aid in the decarbonisation process. These efforts are essential for making both India’s and the global steel industry more sustainable in the future.
SAIL’s Chairman, Amarendu Prakash, expressed excitement about the collaboration, emphasizing the urgent need for the steel industry to align with climate goals. He affirmed SAIL’s commitment to addressing climate change and fostering innovative approaches in steel production.
BHP’s Chief Commercial Officer, Rag Udd, noted their long-standing relationship with SAIL and the importance of working together to find decarbonisation solutions for the blast furnace method. He acknowledged that reducing emissions in the steel industry is a challenging task that requires collective expertise and resources to make a significant impact both now and in the future.
