
T.V. Narendran, the new Chairman of World Steel Association
T.V. Narendran, MD and CEO of Tata Steel, has been appointed chairman of the World Steel Association (worldsteel), making him the second Indian to achieve this role, following Sajjan Jindal of JSW Group, who served as chairman in 2021. Alongside Narendran, Ugur Dalbeler, CEO of Colakoglu Metalurji AS, and Leon Topalian, President and CEO of Nucor Corporation, have been elected as Vice Chairs.
As part of his new role, Narendran will also join the 17-member Executive Committee of the association, which includes prominent figures like Sajjan Jindal, ArcelorMittal Executive Chairman LN Mittal, Dalbeler, and Topalian. The committee also features Abdulqader Al-Mubarak, CEO of Saudi Iron & Steel Company (HADEED), David Burritt, President and CEO of United States Steel Corporation, In Hwa Chang, Chairman of POSCO Holdings, and Masayuki Hirose, President and CEO of JFE Steel Corporation.
Additionally, other notable members of the committee are HU Wangming, Chairman of China Baowu Steel Group Corporation, Tadashi Imai, Representative Director and President of Nippon Steel Corporation, Andre Bier Gerdau Johannpeter, Executive Vice Chairman of Gerdau SA, Paolo Rocca, President and CEO of Techint Group, YU Yong, Chairman of HBIS Group Co., Ltd, and Hubert Zajicek, a member of the board and CEO of the Steel Division at voestalpine AG.
In light of his election, Narendran emphasized the need for India to establish a manufacturing economy that is more environmentally sustainable than China’s, highlighting the potential for growth and innovation within the Indian steel sector.
